Meta ads reward the brands that treat them as a system: creative made for each placement, one test at a time and measurement you can trust.
Why creative decides so much of the result
Meta's delivery system has grown better at finding people for you. What you control most is what those people see. For Meta ads for skincare brands, the creative now does much of the targeting: a first frame that speaks to one person's concern will find that person more reliably than a narrow audience setting. That is why we spend most of our effort on the work itself, and on learning from it.
Design for the placement: safe zones for Reels, Stories and Feed
Reels and Stories fill a vertical screen, and parts of it are covered by the interface: the profile name, the caption and the buttons. Meta publishes safe-zone guides for each placement, and every piece of text, every logo and every face should sit inside them. Feed placements are closer to 4:5, so a vertical film needs a considered crop rather than a squeeze. Design for sound off, with captions, and make the first second do the work. A small set of templates, one for each placement, means every new idea starts in the right frame.
A simple testing rhythm: one variable at a time
Testing only teaches you something when one thing changes at a time. Start with three hooks across two angles: three different first seconds, each paired with two reasons someone might care. Run them fairly, read the results each week, keep what works and retire what does not. Write down what you learn, because the notes become your brand's own playbook.
Budgets, patience and the learning period
New ad sets begin in a learning phase while Meta works out whom to show them to. Meta's Business Help Center describes the learning phase ending once an ad set has about 50 optimisation events within seven days of its last significant edit. Every major change, such as a new creative, a new audience or a large budget shift, can send an ad set back into learning. Patience is part of the method: set a budget that can reach that point, then leave it alone long enough to learn.
Measurement that holds up: the Meta Pixel, the Conversions API and UTM tags
Good decisions need good data. The Meta Pixel records what people do on your website. The Conversions API sends the same events from your own server, so less is lost to browser settings. UTM tags, short labels on every link, tell your analytics where each visit came from. Compare all three with your own sales records, and trust the numbers that agree. Set them up before you spend, because data you did not collect cannot be recovered later.
Mistakes we see most often
- Editing ads every day, so nothing ever finishes learning.
- Resizing one design for every placement instead of designing for each.
- Testing five things at once, so no result can be read.
- Judging a campaign on likes instead of sales and enquiries.
- Sending every ad to the home page instead of the page it promises.
A system turns spending into learning, and learning is what makes each campaign better than the last.
Questions, answered
How much should a beauty brand spend on Meta ads?
It depends on your goals and your margins, but the budget should be large enough for each ad set to finish learning. For our Metamorphosis partnership, we recommend a starting ad budget from USD 500 a month, paid directly to the platforms (CHÉ Services and Investment Guide).
How soon will we know whether our ads work?
It depends on your spend and how often people buy. Read results weekly, and judge a test only after it has had a fair run.
Do we need the Conversions API?
If you sell online, it is worth setting up. It gives Meta a fuller picture of what happens after the click, which helps delivery and your own reporting.
